From Moondog@VERT/CAVEBBS to All on Wed Mar 25 00:40:00 2020
For those who are considered non-essential or cannot partake in normal communi ty events, what have you been doing to stay occupied?

One project I've been working on is making wall hung paper boxes to place
mail in after the junk mail has been sorted out. My brother rents from me,
so when the mail is brought to the house, it's been going in two piles on the kitchen table. The two inboxes will work better, since there's no chance something could be set on top of the mail, or a letter can be accidentally tossed out with other advertisement paper.

Another has been updating the lighting on my light duty hobby / workbench. i would like to put a bright LED bar on a swing arm to adjust where light is needed. There's an old magnifier lamp at my father's house in the basement, a nd it would be a perfect host to have the flourescent ring bulb replaced with LED strips.

I've got a slight rise in the middle of my range out on the south field. I'm thinking I'm going to try to take some earth out of that rise and move it to the berm that makes up the backstop. It's at about the 30 yard mark and causes me to have to put the target at 100 yards up a little higher than I like. I figure if I can take two or two and a half feed out of that rise I can lower my targets at 100 yards and not have to worry so much about shots going long.

Once that's done, I figure a few hundred rounds through the Garand and then a similar number through the M1 carbine just to get them sighted in. Then a couple of ARs that need to be sighted in and broken in, and then for fun my Mini14.

THEN I'll have some brass and a good excuse to spend some time reloading...

I was laid off recently, so I've been spending a good portion of my time looking for jobs & talking to recruiters via email & phone like I normally would during a job search. I've also been gaming on my PC a bit more than usual.. I've been into retro gaming lately, but I also recently bought Civilization 6 on sale from Steam for about $15 and have played that a bit. Civilization is one of those kinds of games you can play for hours at a time.

I also like working on programming projects (including BBS tools), which I've been doing from time to time.

Not a whole lot since I am working from home.

But that does let me work on low bandwidth projects.

    1. The new server. I picked up a Raspberry Pi rack from etsy and I am setting it up with 2.5" hard drives and a couple Raspberry Pis. So far, it seems to be working.

I can work on the Pis in between application builds.

    2. One of my non-computer hobbies is renovating old Tonka/Buddy L trucks. I have 2 plain ones that have been sitting around for a while and am going to finish them up to give to a co-worker who recently had a kid.

It only takes a few minutes to put on a coat of paint then I have to wait - and work.

Unfortunately, my workspace it taken up with my daily work. So playing with my new birthday present (a fancy desoldering tool) has to be put on hold.

And I had to put my TRS-80 Model 4P on the shelf to make room on the desk. So playing with that's on hold.

I'm getting a Tandy 1400LT today. We'll see about that.

Sounds good as well. I miss my grandparent's farm. My grandmother had 160 acres, 60 of it was wooded. Lot's of good deer and squirrel hunting, plus
some great spots for 400-500 yard shots into steep hillsides or thick fallen tree trunks.

The Tandy sounds like fun. I've been watching Adrian Blacks' Youtube channel and he has shown some cool Tandy videos.

Recently I picked up a Pi 4 and considered moving over several tasks I use an Athlon X2 5000 for. It's my previous main system and it's running Ubuntu and acts as a file share, document scanning station, and runs Guitarix well
enough with low latency. While I'll probably keep using the 5000 for heavier tasks, I could get by with using a Pi for document scanning and things I
wantto keep off my Win10 box.

Well, the local ham community is becoming quite active, so I've started working on getting the ham shack back up and running, and been taking part in regular "isolation nets" to keep in touch during this time of social distancing. Ham and electronic projects are getting to the top of the pile now. :)

Don't have quite that much land, just about 16 acres, boarding BLM land. Not much wooded land here in the prairie so we have to build berms and backstops. One of the positive aspects here is that my neighbors also shoot on their property so nobody can bitch much when I do. I miss the wooded land back in New York but you'll never get me to move back there with the current political situation in Albany.

The Tandy 1400LT is working well. I didn't have the right power supply, but I got close enough to fire it up for a bit.
The screen is good. The floppy drives both work.
I took it apart and inspected the insides. The backup battery is not leaking (but it's on the list to replace soon).
I gave it a good cleaning and the correct power supply should be here today. Hopefully, I can play with it this weekend.

I'm working on a Pi4 project too. I picked up a Raspberry Pi cluster rack from Etsy and I'm building a new server for the house. 4 2.5" hard drives. The Pi4 will be the file/media server. There's even enough room in the rack for a cold standby Pi4 and a sandbox Pi3 with its own hard drive.

I found that a Pi is able to power 1 2.5" hard drive (with SATA to USB adaptor) but not 2. For my server, I put a powered USB hub to run the hard drives.

My workbench project today was to install a 24" 1300 lumen light fixture.
The fixture was the type that attached to exisitng wiring, so I modified it to
take a standard pc power cable. I salvage a poer connector off an old power supply, then I had to Dremel a hole for it to fit, then hot glue it in.

I plugged it in (and it works) however it needs to be much higher than under the shelf above the bench. I'm drawing up a boom or gantry type mount so I
can adjust the fixture's height and angle. I'll use some scrap wood until I can get to a hardware store and build a proper base.

We have been swapping over to LED "daylight" bulbs, especially in the rooms we use more often and for hobby stuff - LOVE them!!!

I recently had to replace a couple lightbulbs in a ceiling fan unit in our house. I thought about buying a couple of Compact Fluorescent bulbs, but it seems those are hard to find now in favor of the LED bulbs. I've heard the LED bulbs are more energy-efficient, so I can see why compact fluorescent bulbs might be being phased out. The LED bulbs I bought are white/daylight bulbs, and they seem a little brighter than the old bulbs that were in the unit, but I like the white lite. It seems like a more pure light, with the older bulbs being more yellow. The LED bulbs say they're supposed to last 10 years, which is another bonus. I recently had to replace a couple lightbulbs in a ceiling fan unit in
our house. I thought about buying a couple of Compact Fluorescent
bulbs, but it seems those are hard to find now in favor of the LED
bulbs. I've heard the LED bulbs are more energy-efficient, so I can
see why compact fluorescent bulbs might be being phased out. The LED bulbs I bought are white/daylight bulbs, and they seem a little
brighter than the old bulbs that were in the unit, but I like the white lite. It seems like a more pure light, with the older bulbs being more yellow. The LED bulbs say they're supposed to last 10 years, which is another bonus. I doubt we'll even be in this house for 10 more years,
as we've been looking to get into a better house for us.

The CFLs also had mercury in them, making them difficult to dispose of.

The only problem I've had is with the dimmable LEDs. The older wall switches may not work well with them. But swapping out the switches wasn't very expensive.

We have been swapping over to LED "daylight" bulbs, especially in the

Yes, CFLs and LEDs are great for that. I have one table lamp I like to leave on as a night light, it lights up a stairway and the upper floor, so if you get up for a drink of water, you can see your way to the kitchen.

It's nice having a 5w LED bulb there instead of a 100w incandescent bulb.

I've had the BBS (now since I've gotten a break in the weather to fix

Hmm, OK. Still, the US seems to be taking it more casually for the number of
    cases compared to here.

That is because, in the US, those decisions are mostly being made at
the state and local levels. Some states closed in-person dining a lot sooner than others (some may not have closed it at all), as an example.

Ineresting. Here, the states and federal government have regular meetings, to plan the response to COVID. The Federal government usually issue guidelines, which the states have the power to enforce. Some states have gone over and above the guidelines and tighten things a bit more. Obviously, issues like immigration are handled at national level, though most states have also implemented their own internal border closures and quarantine.

Some states have closed schools and most business but have not asked their citizens to shelter in place/lockdown... since most business are closed, there are not many places to go. Our state has done that, and
has also asked that we not gather in groups. Enforcement on that last
bit depends on where you are... the big cities are policing this more
    than the smaller ones.

Here, we're not allowed to gether in groups more than 2 and nonessential travel is banned, though what's determined as nonessential (i.e. whether it falls into one of the 4 permitted categories) is sometimes up to the police. The 4 categories are:

Obtaining supplies (i.e. supermarket shopping, etc)
    Medical (doctor, hospital, pharmacy, etc)
Work/school (where work or school at home aren't an option - doing these at home are the preferred option)
    Exercise.

We are allowed to be out in public just as long as we are distancing
and are not gathering in groups. They have had to crack down on a
church or two for holding in-person services and other large-group gatherings.

The authorities have closed venues where people haven't been following the rules. Local councils have made their own decisions. Luckily, the athletics track isn't totally closed, though only those of us with entry cards can use it now, provided we stick to the rules. But because the track is across town, I do the bulk of my sessions around here in the streets. In some ways that's had some bonuses, like being able to do some really good hill sessions that aren't possible at the track.

Last I heard, the US as a whole is a little more casual than Canada,
but a quite a bit *less* casual than Mexico, Brazil, or Sweden, where
    they have apparently closed nothing.

The US is a lot more casual than Australia too, but while the restrictions are causing economic chaos, people are largely in support of them, as we are seeing dramatic effects on the infection rate. We still have a while to go, as the government is keen to avoid the "rebound" that has been seen in other
    ountries.

Within the past week or two, our city did pass an ordanace banning more

There's a lot more consistency here. As for types of business, there's a list of "high risk" businesses that were forced to close - basically places where there's likely large scale close contact or high people traffic. Other businesses work on a case by case basis, provided they adhere to the social distancing rules. Some businesses trade with restrictions on the number of people in store, some have gone to online orders only, some have closed down for the time being. Many have added online offerings to their traditional methods.

And some businesses in the "prohibited" category are still trading, by ceasing only those activities that are prohibited. For example, many cafes have switched to offering take away coffee and food, which is allowed, but have stopped their sit in dining. Even pubs have taken to offering take away/home delivery of their meals, which is a new thing, because pubs are very much a sit in tradition for dining.

bulbs, but it seems those are hard to find now in favor of the LED

Yeah - I mentioned "daylight" bulbs - that's the brighter, TRUE, white.

    Dr. What,

Which desoldering tool did you get? After a motorcycle accident in 1007, I've only got one arm. I've been trying to put together a soldering/desoldering station together on thecheap. I made an automatic solder feeder with an arduino and stepper controller so I can solder with one arm. I've not had the best of luck with the desoldering portion.

I've noticed a few of my favorite youtube channels have some nice desoldering irons but they cost more than I would like to spend for a part-time hobby.

Sorry, not good language. Should've said I'm starting a BBS using Synchronet. Although having said that, I am toying with the idea of writing some BBS software. Back in the day I started coding some BBS software from scratch in Turbo Pascal, and put a good years worth of work into it, but lost interest like most other folk when the internet really took off. I got the Hakko FR-301.
I haven't had a chance to actually use it yet. 8( So I don't know it it would work well with one hand, but it looks like it might.

My soldering iron (and feeder) are Hakky brand. I found the Hakko 373-11 feeder on ebay and it works perfectly with the FX-888D. I'll take a hard look at the FR-301, thanks.

Would love to hear about your experience with it if you remember this post once you get around to using it!

    Thanks!

Unfortunately lost all the code a decade ago.

I asked because I have always wondered how difficult it would be. I'm a C# developer by profession so I feel like that's a nice head start. I'm sure there are lots communication standards to learn, protocol wise, but once you have the basic routines written, the rest of it would fall into place.

Sorry you lost the code. :( Been there...

I have a Weller soldering iron station, similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLC100-Adjustable-Soldering-Station/dp/B00AOH3W6I Except mine came with a wire ball to help clean off the soldering iron tip. I think it works fairly well.

If I did it now, I'd be using Python. There are some terminal servers in Python that could be adapted to become BBS Software without too much difficulty. I think the hard part wouldbe the protocols and standards as you said, which are all from the 90s. Getting around those would be tough, but imagine if you could write software that is one click ready for Fidonet and other mail networks....

I'll try. I might get lucky and the new desk that is supposed to arrive on Thursday may give me the space I need to start working on my projects - one of which is practice with the desolderer.

Now, I'll just need the motivation. Spending 8 hours working in the Man Cave means I really don't want to spend even more time here - even on personal projects.

Yeah, if you can hit the repeater on it, why not use it to keep an ear out.

So, I turned it on, and I can hear it fine, and I can 'trigger' the repeater, but they can't hear me. :(

    Bummer. :(

Yeah - I have a home made antenna a neighbor gave me, but never have

the wrong end on one end, so I've ordered a 'fitting' adapter to adapt

I will be replacing the flourescents in my garage soon. My garage is
actually a 32x24 pole building next to the house with one wide door. It originally had a couple of bulbs on the trusses, however I replaced them with larger light fixtures. When the weather gets below freezing, they don't
always light up right away, or they slowly warm up. LED's don't have that problem, and i no longer have to fuss with ballasts.

It has a short pole - hammered it into the ground. Was able to talk on

to hear in my truck. I can talk to it from the mobile, but they couldn't

Next step - my mom has an antenna on a tower attached to her house. Now
that she doesn't use it anymore, she said I can have it. Gonna get with
my son one weekend soon and take it down, bring it here and put it up
at the end of the house.

Where the bedroom is is on the OPPISITE end of the house from the electrical wires, so I feel safe putting it there. I plan to put this antenna up and
see what it does, then down the road if I want to spend a few bucks I'll
get a better one. I'm thinking this one is directional, so I might be
a little limited for now, but that's okay too.

F96T12CW were the flur bulbs. I have two of those '2 bulb' fixtures in
the carport. A few years ago one of the ballests went out, so I replaced
it. Then the other ballast went out so I removed it and replaced the
    'guts' with the LED setup.

I don't know what type they are - I ordered the kit from Home Depot.
What it came with was the wires and bulbs. It's technically FOUR
4' LED's that use the same 'casing' that the old fixture used, but the
ballast is bypasses and/or removed first.

Did you remove the old ballast entirely? If so, I suppose your LEDs are the Type B?

    Yes I did.

Do you find any noticeable radio interference near the LEDs?

No - they are in the carport and my wife's truck lives there. :-) She
has satillite radio and it loses signal most of the time in the carport
anyway. LOL It could affect the mobile ham rigs, but I never try to
use them in the carport anyway, cause the house sits 'between' the carport
    end and the repeater.

Many years ago I took a motorcycle driving course. Less than $200 (I

I discovered which bike was the best fit for me. But, I never ended up buying a motorcycle of my own. I either borrowed other people's bikes, rented, or took out test drives at dealers to relive the experience. The license is for life. Now, in my almost feeble age I imagine that one day

Such as the price of gear. <G> Several years ago, there was a rig at the Hamvention...described as "DC To Daylight" for $20,000!! Now, I could outfit
a nice shack for $20,000...but for one rig, that's overkill.

That's why I operate "internet radio"...$1150 a month on disability does
    not go very far.
