recently I've done similar search in order to find something that runs well on linux.

I came across SEMPOINT -- quite nice client that ran well in wine.
I didn't try it in win 10, but I've read somewhere on the nets here that it runs fine there -- you just need some tool for win16 compatibility. I can't remember the name though.

you could always run your own bbs and use THAT as a qwk reader.
that's essentially what a lot of people do and have done for decades.

with synchronet bbses you can link your msg bases up via nntp and that makes it super easy. you would just have to use one for a feed.

True. I ran Synchronet a decade ago. I didn't do much with it other than explore writing a door and a couple of minor custom mods. Nothing really useful, more for fun and learning.

And I've thought about doing so again. Although I have a dozen other projects at the moment and another two dozen that I would rather dig into. Not to mention working an extra 15 to 20 hours a week at one of the best jobs I could ask for, just because I want to. ;)

I was able to install and launch SEMPOINT in Windows 11 using https://github.com/otya128/winevdm

I imported a QWK packet and will give it a try. Thanks for mentioning it.

installing synchronet is really not a project. it takes minutes.
it wouldn't take long to put in networked msg boards either. if you have a half hour to spare, you can do it.

Another option is to get a node number or point number and set up just a
mailer and tosser. I did that for a while with Maximus/BinkleyTerm, then
used TIMed to read the message bases directly. It was akin to reading
with a QWK reader, except I could go back and look through the whole
message base.

Yep! I think Synchronet is the easiest BBS I have ever set up. Took me almost five minutes (although I will admit that I did not do anything special with networked msg bases or anything like that.) Just a plain jane setup of 6 nodes.

Ftn is pretty easy to setup;you just get the numbers right.
I don't know what i'm doing and I tought people how to do it and some of them are still running their own nets. I've also fixed some people's setups.

Some people like to act like it's complicated stuff and act like they are authorities on it. In the end it's just getting the right info put together, and that's something anybody can do.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to set up. But IMO it's good to put some time into customizing it so that it's not a stock setup, and that is the project.

I think you overlooked me saying that I had Synchronet running a decade ago.

You also don't know me at all. Everything is a project. If or when I install SBBS again, it won't be just to read messages. :D

I use Sempoint for many years. It supports QWK, BW, and MSG
style. It has many bbs/fido -centric things like stealing and
using taglines, and threading of messages.

But give Winpoint a try as well. All you need to do is get
established as a point with a BBS that will give you a unique
number.
