If you are running TWM or CWM as window managers, you will get a notification in the xconsole window. Something such as "sd5: XXXXMB, 512 bytes/sector, XXXX
sectors"
The typical external drive with a single FAT32 filesystem can then be mounted by root with mount_msdos /dev/sd5i /mnt or whatever
