Is anyone still using Keybase? I went through a Keybase period, then Signal and Telegram came around. It'd be nice if one secure messaging platform could work for everyone I know, but I know that having a monoculture wouldn't be the most secure way to go.

I gave it a try, but mostly to have a place I can manage my files and
MD derived knowledge base easier, but I quickly found that Keybase's unique security features built on top of block chain ain't that cool
USP to me comparing to some more convient solutions on all fronts to
have file sharing, communication and git management under one hood.

I like the idea, but keybase is way too premature for my taste to give
    it a serious try.

I wonder how hard it would be to migrate BBS chat to xmpp? It'd be nice

Same here. I have been on IRC since 1995 till approximately 2005, then FB killed most of the activity on IRCNET I used and then people forgot about maintaining their unix shells to keep their sessions on screen. but still remembered that it is not good to expose your IP openly unless you're looking for troubles.

This is sorted out on Discord, I know it can be sorted out on IRC too, yet it seems that as the technology just works, it's not a subject of the same vibe as it used to be.

I believe using the same tech, just reintroducing some client as a service with federation as an option to create could create a new old buzz around youngsters.

Otherwise yet, technically IRC is still here.. but practically gaming kids are on Discord, nerds on Matrix and normies still stay on FB, even these days, even if they're aware of its own privacy issues.

There is nothing sarcastic in my response, honestly, the best place to talk about BBSs and life I found are the BBSes themselves.

Seriously. It's just few of us here, but who needs millions buzzing nonsense if you can find few who actually share meaningful opinions that resonate with you and trigger you to talk more. I respect this community's opinions (even if I sometimes disagree) more than most of the places online I know these days.

Point is that BBSes I use for messaging are great substitute of USENET I knew back in the 90s and early 00s. If I needed more IRC/chat formula then I haven't found ideal place. I occasionally try some IRC servers to experience ghost towns like you said. I use discord with few servers related to retro computing, data hoarding, demo scene, dungeon crawler (blobber) games and BBSes (Araknet, BBS World).

I find it fine but not ideal. BBS orientated discords are ghost towns. But perhaps this is good. if we diverted our time connecting to terminal and chatted on discord about BBSing instead... what's the point about BBSes in regards to keep the discussions on the boards.

For me BBS orientated discord servers are only to spot some nicknames I know from the boards for private messaging. Sometimes it's more convenient to realize something quicker.

To discuss life (any topic) the USENET formula on BBS FTNs good enough. I don't find it necessary to look after another platform for it.

I think this is the key. The internet naturally tends toward quantity over
quality, which is a negative for finding a community. You want a place that
can handle newcomers, and that means finding one that isn't overwhelmed by them.

Personally, BBSes have been great for that. The slow pace makes it easy to
jump in (after some lurking to get a feel for things), and the low number of users is good for getting a sense of the community.
