• Mystic and Enigma side-by-side

From Patch@21:1/101 to All on Thu Oct 12 10:44:05 2023
When I installed Mystic, I also installed enigma because ... well, why not? I'm really happy to see that we have a community for that here as well.

Once I get to a 'satisfied' stage of modifying and adding things to mystic, I want to start doing things on the enigma side.

One immediate question that I have, can you manually pass a connection from mystic to enigma in the 'Doors section? I remember someone doing this in the BBS days where they could access another BBS by selecting the option in the 'Doors' area, and the caller information was passed and such ... could Mystic do that?

Yes on the Mystic side you can create a menu entry with the IT command I believe to telnet out of Mystic into the Enigma side OR you can use IR to RLogin into the Enigma (I believe Enigma allows RLOGIN). On my logoff
menu on my Mystic board, I have a section that allows users logging off
to not only view a "Other BBS'" list but highlight them and dial out to them..

in fact, Mystic could be run from another BBS basically like a Door32 door:

A while back I created a 'door' mod to do this. It's currently mostly untested because the person requesting it lost interest I guess. I'm happy to bring it back up if you'd like to try it.

Basically, it allows you to pass (from another board) username info that will automatically create an account on enig so they can just bridge like you describe

I love this. If you can use the same rlogin logic that Synchronet and GameSrv use, it would probably be the easiest for users/sysops to adopt. I've written a standalone connector that can launch as a door from any BBS and connect this way.

It's pretty generic, so should be very doable from whatever system (note: You do need to be able to generate a sha). Happy to dig up the mod if anyone is interested.

FWIW, to achieve this in enigma, you'd just do the following:
    1) Create a new menu.hjson entry for your board selections, using the 'telnet-bridge' built in mod.
    2) Point to it in your existing logoff menu flow

Yep. Just pushed some changes last night, actually. Trying to finish up the ActivityPub integration enough for 'prime time'. A native DOS emulator is being worked on (so you can run DOS doors directly from enig), etc.

    You just piqued my interest!

A native DOS emulator, eh? I wonder the speed and compatibility. Are you using js-dos? I'd be curious to see if it's possible to use this as a standalone module for other BBSes, since DOS doors are a common pain point.

dosemu2 is good but not perfect - some games are still wonky. Lore is one. LORD 2 is another. dosemu2 also seems to get stuck running nightly maintenance at times and I have to manually un-stuck it.

I wonder...how capable is js-dos or whatever it is you're using? There are some old DOS BBS packages that would be cool to run in something like this. Think iniquity or OBV/2 or even something like MajorBBS or TBBS.

Sorry for the off topic post :P

The GitHub project is probably the best spot. A lot of things are documented, though there are still holes. Discord is another:
