• I want to start an IP radio station

From Malvinas@21:4/167 to All on Sun Apr 23 19:56:29 2023
I want to start a radio station that will broadcast through the internet (and possibly go on the air 'for real' :D ...). I have a notebook I don't use I'm thinking about putting it to good use on the radio station. What advices can you give me on this?

The advice I can give is that it seems like a really good idea until you look into what you need to do to actually legally license the music that you probably want to play. That's what always ends up being the deal breaker for me everytime I get a notion to do something similar.

After the message I posted earlier, I realized I didn't address this issue you mention. The thing is I plan to broadcast only free copyleft music, from Jamendo and other (CC) sites. Also, maybe, if the thing does get going, contact directly to the artists and ask for their explicit permission to broadcast their music on my radio... I guess my life is going to be much easier down that path.

You'll most likely need a license to broadcast "on air" depending on where you are. In Australia you need a license (anything from LPON which is limited to 1 watt, then you move up the ladder to community broadcasting, up to commercial. all except LPON are near impossible to get) to broadcast any form of AM/FM radio. People enjoy finding "pirate" radio stations and reporting them. If you end up interfering with a commercial station be prepared :)

Here in the states, it's *possible* that you might have access to a local community radio station that allows the 'general public' to host radio shows. The other option is to rent airtime, which I know you can do on Shortwave.
(If you check out the shortwave subreddit, there are usually guys on their pimping their radioshows.) I think one advantage of both of those options is that both the community radio station and the shortwave station almost certainly have ASCAP agreements, which means you can play anything you want (well, anything that ASCAP has licensed, which I believe is almost
    everything.)

Make sure you have your music royalty / licensing sorted. In New Zealand I use a group called One Music that represent both the artists/composers and the record labels/publishers.

Do some research on Icecast/Shoutcast music streaming servers :)

Have a look at free/paid music playout software e.g. Rivendell Radio Automation System

    I'm running a low power FM station online (totalfm.nz) and on-air (107.3Mhz)

Probably best to continue this thread over in FSX_MUSIC as the topic is not really about BBS.

The thread kinda derailed onto straight airwave broadcast only discussion, but I'm thinking FIRST and foremost to start "broadcasting" online, and then, MAYBE move onto actual airwave broadcasting.
I'm from Argentina (thought you might figure that out, since my nickname heh..), and here we have a law that anyone boradcasting on commercial FM band, that doesn't interfere bother other radio stations can go on for at least 6 months straight without even filing a single paper for a permit, so that you have time to try out and see if your operation is feasible with the hardware you have.
So, by the least, I'd have 6 months of broadcast bonanza ahead, before having to legally respond by filing for a permit.
But hte main thing still will be online "broadcasting".
Thank you and everyone who gave good advices!!

Paul (Avon) suggested the Rivendell system, which is excellent. Another one you could try is LibreTime (https://libretime.org), which is really easy to install and maintain. LibreTime is also being used by a lot of community radio stations for both Internet streaming as well as FM/AM broadcasting scenarios. They also have a lot of great documentation available to get you going quickly.

Nice. Still as you mentioned online, technically you need to learn shoutcast/icecast as somebody mentioned and test how you'd like to manage content, playlists and if you dare to have some live auditions. Shouldn't be hard to organize but also not sure if a laptop is a feasible solution if you find users adopting your streams at scale. I'd rather host it somewhere outside my household unless it is aimed at few people from your hood.

I think there is a lot of edu content about icecast all around, but if you have any specific question, just go on and ask.

That would be awesome, and I'd sure be happy to play your music on my station. Right now I'm trying to get the OS going and install and configure LibreTime on it. When I get that done and start needing music to go on testing the broadcast capability, I'll PM you so we find a way for you to send me the files. Thank you very much.

The advice I can give is that it seems like a really good idea until you look into what you need to do to actually legally license the music that you probably want to play. That's what always ends up being the deal breaker for me everytime I get a notion to do something similar.

I run a low power FM station in my home city and also stream it online (totalfm.nz) and in my case I pay an annual fee for broadcasters such as my setup here in New Zealand. This fee is administered by an organization set up to collect royalty payments on behalf of composers, artists and publishers.

You can find out more about the New Zealand scene by heading to onemusicnz.com if interested. Hope this helps :)
