And...we're off. So far, not dissappointing, though I will say, the first season of this show set the bar *very* high. There was not a lot (that is to say, very little) Anson Mount in this episode. I need more Pike and his finely coifed hair. :/

I was just about to post something about this show also and you beat me to it :)

Yes interesting to see what they do with the characters and cast, the new (soon to be) chief engineer sounds like she has an interesting back story. I also thought it was interesting in their choice of 'bad alien race of the series' was flagged to be at the end of the episode.

Did you spot the new scenes in the opening credits? :)

Yeah, I have to second the "more Pike" thing. I liked the concept of a
Spock centered episode and the character development that went with it,
but I didn't think it was appropriate for the season primere... the
Captain should have been featured more prominently (IMHO).

Still, good episode. Plan to watch it again today when I'm a little more
awake (got out of work late that day and it was probably well after 11pm
when I watched it... way past my bedtime on a "school night").

On that topic... (The bad alien race). That part did irk me a little,
given that in the original series they were supposedly "discovered". But
going into that discussion could kinda be spoilerish (though that meant
you missed the whole last season... and a few episodes of "Enterprise")
and honestly... well, let's face it. As "history" re-writes go, it's
    minorish.

I honestly never ended up watching all of Enterprise so perhaps I need to?
Yes I kind of thought it was a bit of low hanging fruit really to advance that race as the possible bad guy for the season... still we should wait to see what they do with it, and as you mention there;s been some references in past episodes.

I do love me some Pike, though. I loved seeing him literally risking his
life for his crew, thought that the issue with Admiral April will come
back to haunt him, loved how he poured April's drink into his, and once
Una was back onboard, I snickered at the hug, followed by the pat on the shoulder.

WHen Spock mentioned Una's secret (harkening back to one of the Short
Treks from Discovery) I laughed out loud by myself. My wife looked at me quizzically, which she's been known to do when Star Trek is on.

True .. I have the OG DVDs and remember seeing that episode on the reruns years ago. So I was always like, wait PIKE was in a chair at the end .. and couldn't talk .. I'm guessin' they will do that at the Series Finale' when the time comes.

I liked Jack Quaid in "The Boys", and it took me a moment to recognize his voice in Lower Decks. He embodied the animated Boimler well, and I loved the yelp when Spock tells him to "seek cover".

When reading about the Lower Decks / Strange New Worlds crossover episode, I read that they drew the Lower Decks characters to look (at least somewhat) like their voice actors. That ended up making the crossover episode work fairly well, as it was a live-action episode and the voice actors appeared as themselves.

Can't say I'm loving Star Trek SNW E09... This season is 'fluffy' .....

I like what they're doing this season. It seems more light-hearted in places and different from what they've usually been doing (in a good way).

Yeah, was NOT a fan of E09 either. Should have had more variety to the music styles, and the Klingon Backstreet Boys should have been left on the cutting room floor. Or at the very least, not have them raid the Gold Rangers closet. All that gold lemma was VERY un-Klingon!

I think the un-Klingonness of it was the whole point, and it made that one of the best scenes ever. As one of the Klingons said earlier in the episode, they had faced dishonor for their singing they were made to do out there.

I ended up, fast forwarding to the end and benched it, it's supposed to be scifi, and unfortunately it was just disappointing. Feels like the writers have lost the plot.

IMO sci-fi doesn't have to be all serious all the time, and it's good to mix things up a bit sometimes. I think it's good to have some comic relief sometimes. I guess that's why I like The Orville too..

I wasn't expecting that (after watching the pre-show). But I was impressed on how well they all could sing (and didn't know about the Academy Award for one singer/actress).

I was not happy/impressed with the Klingon Boy-Band skit though; reminded me of how SNL is still trying to be funny today. After watching the aftershow, though, I was happy they brought back one character from the previous season for it.

I thought the Klingon scene was one of the funniest scenes in the episode.
I haven't watched SNL in quite a while though. Trying or not, I feel like most of the time now it's just not really funny. SNL goes through ups & downs though. Hopefully it will be funny again at some point.

Actually, that Lower Decks crossover almost made me not watch the show.
In fact, I actually waited a whole week and only then because I heard the episode with the Klingon ambassador was worth watching. I really hated
that character (the crossover purple haired idiot). It just didn't seem
like it belonged in a very out of place way.

    Then... the musical.

I ended up not watching that one after five minutes. I eventually
(again, a week later) gave it a chance... but... It took some alcohol
(and I can't really do that much anymore, so I might be parting ways with
    the series).

Ok, in the end, the musical wasn't so bad, and I liked the season
cliffhanger enough... but they better keep these episodes few and far
    between.
